Planet Labs, VITO Deepen Alliance to Advance Global Earth Observation for Sustainability

SAN FRANCISCO: In a move set to reshape how satellite data powers global solutions, Planet Labs PBC, a recognized leader in Earth observation technology, and the European research organization VITO have announced a major extension to their long-standing partnership. The collaborative effort is dedicated to accelerating the use of space-based data for agriculture, global monitoring, and environmental resilience on a worldwide scale.

Planet, renowned for operating the world’s largest fleet of imaging satellites, will integrate its daily, high-resolution imagery with VITO’s robust analytics and service platforms. This extended collaboration aims to generate more timely and actionable insights for both public and private sector stakeholders. VITO will now leverage Planet’s PlanetScope archive—including Fusion and Analysis-Ready PlanetScope products—alongside advanced analytic feeds and planetary variables, ushering in an era of rich, user-centric solutions.

“VITO and Planet are united in our belief that in order to protect our planet, we must have the data and insights to understand how it’s changing daily, weekly and beyond,” emphasized Ashley Johnson, President and CFO of Planet Labs. Johnson stressed that combining Planet’s unique data with VITO’s analytical expertise will unlock new opportunities for tackling urgent global issues.

The latest phase of the partnership focuses on delivering cutting-edge habitat maps created from Planet’s high-resolution satellite data. These habitat maps will empower companies and governments to assess the effects of their activities on biodiversity, fostering informed and sustainable decision-making practices.

“Our reinforced partnership with Planet marks a significant step forward in accelerating the use of Earth observation for societal benefit,” said Inge Neven, CEO of VITO. Neven noted that Planet’s daily global imagery features are a perfect complement to VITO’s analytics, and that together, the two organizations are better positioned to provide actionable intelligence for advancing sustainability around the globe.

The expanded Planet-VITO partnership is expected to drive innovation in environmental monitoring and analytics. By fusing advanced satellite observation with powerful data interpretation tools, the two entities aim to deliver real-world solutions that directly contribute to safeguarding biodiversity, promoting sustainable development, and enhancing societal well-being for years to come.
